Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Areas for Every Traveler

Pawintra Chuychart • October 6, 2026

From riverside hotels and historic neighborhoods to shopping districts and nightlife, where you stay can completely change your Bangkok experience.

Bangkok is enormous, so choosing the right area matters. For your first trip, stay somewhere close to the BTS, MRT or river transport and choose a neighborhood that matches the kind of Bangkok you want to experience.

Sukhumvit: Best for First-Time Visitors

Sukhumvit is one of Bangkok’s easiest areas for first-time visitors, with BTS connections, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and hotels for almost every budget.

Areas around Asok and Phrom Phong are especially convenient if you want to explore different parts of Bangkok without spending half your holiday sitting in traffic.

Siam: Best for Shopping

If shopping is high on your list, Siam puts you right in the middle of Bangkok’s biggest retail district.

Major malls, restaurants and excellent BTS connections are all close by, making Siam convenient for families, younger travelers and anyone who wants modern Bangkok outside the hotel door.

Riverside: Best for Views & Romance

Stay along the Chao Phraya River for a calmer side of Bangkok, with beautiful views, luxury hotels and easy boat access to many historic attractions.

The Riverside is particularly good for couples and travelers who want to return somewhere peaceful after a busy day exploring the city.

Old Town: Best for Temples & Culture

Bangkok’s historic center puts you close to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and some of the city’s most important cultural landmarks.

Choose this area if temples and history are your priority, but remember that BTS and MRT access can be less convenient in some parts than in central Bangkok.

Silom: Best for Food & City Life

Silom combines business-district energy with restaurants, markets, nightlife and easy public transport.

It’s a good all-round alternative to Sukhumvit, especially if you want quick access to both central Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River.

Chinatown: Best for Food Lovers

Stay around Yaowarat if you want Bangkok’s famous food scene right outside your door.

The neighborhood is energetic, colorful and packed with places to eat, especially after dark. MRT access also makes Chinatown much easier to explore from than it once was.

Ari: Best for a More Local Feel

For something quieter, Ari offers cafés, restaurants and a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere away from Bangkok’s busiest tourist districts.

The BTS keeps it connected to central Bangkok, making it a good choice for repeat visitors or travelers who prefer a slower base.

Which Bangkok Area Should You Choose?

For your first visit, choose Sukhumvit.

For shopping, choose Siam.

For luxury and river views, choose the Riverside.

For temples and history, choose the Old Town.

For food, choose Chinatown.

For a quieter local atmosphere, try Ari.
