Where to Stay in Chiang Mai | Best Areas for Every Traveler

Pawintra Chuychart • October 6, 2026

Historic streets, stylish cafés, lively night markets or peaceful riverside stays. The best area in Chiang Mai depends on how you want to experience the city.

Chiang Mai is relatively compact, but each neighborhood has its own atmosphere. Stay inside the Old City for temples and history, head to Nimman for cafés and nightlife, or choose the Riverside when you want somewhere a little quieter.

Here are the best areas to consider for your stay.

Old City: Best for First-Time Visitors

Surrounded by the remains of Chiang Mai's ancient walls and moat, the Old City puts many of the city's most famous temples within easy reach.

You'll find Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, cafés, restaurants and markets nearby, while the compact streets make exploring on foot relatively easy.

It's a particularly convenient choice if this is your first time in Chiang Mai.

Best for: First-time visitors · Temples · Sightseeing

Nimman: Best for Cafés & Modern City Life

West of the Old City, Nimman offers a much more contemporary side of Chiang Mai.

The neighborhood is packed with coffee shops, restaurants, bars, boutiques and modern accommodation. It's especially popular with younger travelers and anyone who wants plenty of places to eat and drink close to their hotel.

Best for: Cafés · Restaurants · Nightlife

Riverside: Best for a Peaceful Stay

Along the Ping River, Chiang Mai becomes noticeably calmer.

The Riverside is home to boutique hotels, restaurants and more relaxed surroundings while remaining close enough to reach the Old City without much trouble.

It's a strong choice for couples or travelers who want somewhere quieter to return to after exploring.

Best for: Couples · Relaxation · Riverside hotels

Night Bazaar: Best for Shopping & Evening Atmosphere
Stay around the Night Bazaar if you like having plenty happening outside your door after sunset.

Markets, restaurants, street food and shops fill the surrounding streets, and the area sits conveniently between the Old City and Ping River.

Best for: Shopping · Night markets · Convenience

Santitham: Best for Local Life & Value

Just north of the Old City, Santitham has a more residential atmosphere than Chiang Mai's main tourist areas.

You'll find local restaurants, cafés and generally good-value accommodation, while both the Old City and Nimman remain within relatively easy reach.

Best for: Value · Local food · Longer stays

Mae Rim: Best for Nature & Resorts

If the city itself isn't your priority, consider staying farther north around
Mae Rim.

Surrounded by mountains and greenery, the area is home to resorts and natural attractions and feels completely different from central Chiang Mai.

You'll trade walkability for peace and scenery, so having transport arranged makes a big difference.

Best for: Nature · Resorts · Quiet escapes

So, Where Should You Stay?

For a first trip, the Old City is the easiest starting point. Choose Nimman for cafés and a more modern atmosphere, the Riverside for something quieter, or the Night Bazaar if you want markets and evening activity nearby.

For longer stays and better value, look around Santitham, while Mae Rim is better suited to travelers who want to escape the city altogether.
