Chiang Mai Itinerary: The Perfect 3 Days
Three days in Chiang Mai gives you enough time to explore ancient temples, escape into the mountains, discover northern Thai food and experience the city after dark.
Chiang Mai is best enjoyed without rushing. This three-day itinerary balances the Old City’s cultural highlights with mountain scenery, local food and enough free time to discover a few places of your own.

Day 1: Temples, Old City & Night Markets
Start your first morning inside Chiang Mai Old City, where many of the city’s most important historic sites are within a relatively small area.
Visit Wat Phra Singh before continuing to Wat Chedi Luang, famous for its impressive ancient chedi in the heart of the city.
Spend the afternoon wandering through the Old City’s smaller streets, stopping at cafés, local restaurants and temples along the way.
After sunset, head to one of Chiang Mai’s evening markets. If your visit falls on the weekend, the Saturday or Sunday Walking Street is particularly worth exploring.
And somewhere between the temples and markets, find yourself a bowl of
khao soi.

Day 2: Doi Inthanon & Northern Thailand’s Mountains
Leave the city behind for a full-day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest mountain.
The park combines mountain landscapes, waterfalls, forest trails and viewpoints, making it one of the most rewarding day trips from Chiang Mai.
Depending on your route, stop at waterfalls such as Wachirathan, explore nature trails or visit the famous twin pagodas surrounded by landscaped gardens.
Return to Chiang Mai in the evening and keep dinner simple. After a full day in the mountains, your legs may have officially resigned.

Day 3: Doi Suthep, Nimman & a Chiang Mai Sunset
Begin your final day with a trip up Doi Suthep to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of northern Thailand’s most famous temples.
The golden temple sits high above Chiang Mai and offers views across the city when conditions are clear.
After returning from the mountain, spend the afternoon around Nimman. Explore its cafés, restaurants and boutiques, or simply slow down with a good coffee after two busy days of sightseeing.
For your final evening, choose a rooftop, riverside restaurant or another night market and enjoy Chiang Mai at a much slower pace.

Have More Time?
If you have another day or two, there is plenty more to explore outside the basic itinerary.
Visit Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls, join a Thai cooking class, spend more time exploring the mountains or choose a responsible elephant sanctuary that prioritizes animal welfare and does not offer riding or performances.
You can also use Chiang Mai as a starting point for exploring more of northern Thailand.
For a first visit, the
Old City makes sightseeing particularly easy.
Nimman is better suited to travelers who prefer cafés and modern city life, while the
Riverside offers a quieter atmosphere.
