The Ultimate Bangkok Travel Guide

Ancient temples, street food, rooftop views and neighborhoods that never seem to slow down. Bangkok is a city where there’s always something happening around the next corner.

Thailand’s capital can feel overwhelming at first, but that’s part of the fun. Spend the morning exploring historic temples, the afternoon wandering through markets and neighborhoods, then finish the day with incredible food or a view across the city skyline.

Why Visit Bangkok?

Bangkok mixes old and new better than almost anywhere in Thailand. Golden temples sit beside modern skyscrapers, traditional markets exist alongside enormous shopping malls, and some of the city’s best meals are served from tiny street-side kitchens.

Whether Bangkok is your first stop in Thailand or your last, give the city enough time to explore beyond the airport.

Best Time to Visit Bangkok

Bangkok can be visited year-round, but November to February generally brings more comfortable weather for exploring outdoors. March to May is hotter, while June to October brings more frequent rain, often in short, heavy bursts.

Whatever the season, expect tropical heat and plan outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day.

Things to Do in Bangkok

Start with the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, visit the enormous reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, then cross the Chao Phraya River to see Wat Arun.

Beyond the temples, explore Chinatown, browse Bangkok’s markets, take a boat along the river and canals, discover the city’s food scene or watch the sunset from above the skyline.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

Choose Sukhumvit for restaurants, nightlife and convenient transport, Siam for shopping and a central location, or the Riverside for views and a more relaxed atmosphere.

For historic Bangkok and easy access to major temples, staying around the Old Town can also be a great choice.

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Areas for Every Traveler

Getting Around Bangkok

Bangkok traffic has a personality of its own, so trains are often your best friend. The BTS Skytrain and MRT connect many of the city’s main neighborhoods, while river boats are useful for exploring attractions along the Chao Phraya.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available, but allow extra time during rush hour.

What to Eat in Bangkok

Food is one of the best reasons to spend time in Bangkok. Try pad kra pao, boat noodles, som tam, grilled meats and mango sticky rice, but don’t feel like you need a checklist. Half the fun is finding somewhere busy, ordering something unfamiliar and seeing what arrives.

From street food to fine dining, Bangkok is a city where your next great meal is rarely far away.

How Long Should You Stay?

For a first visit, three to four days gives you enough time to see the major sights while still experiencing Bangkok beyond the temples.

With three days, you can dedicate one day to historic Bangkok, another to neighborhoods and food, and a final day to markets, shopping or something further outside the center.

Bangkok & Beyond

Bangkok is also an excellent starting point for exploring more of Thailand. Ayutthaya can be visited as a day trip, while domestic flights, trains and buses connect the capital with Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and the islands.

Explore Bangkok

Come for the temples and skyline, but leave some space in your plans for the food, neighborhoods and unexpected corners that make Bangkok memorable.
