Khao Lak Travel Guide | Beaches, Islands & Things to Do
Long beaches, tropical forests, waterfalls and easy access to some of Thailand’s most beautiful islands. Khao Lak is made for travelers who prefer a quieter side of the Andaman coast.
Located north of Phuket in Phang Nga province, Khao Lak offers a completely different atmosphere from Thailand’s busier beach destinations. The coastline stretches for miles, national parks sit just beyond the resorts and some incredible underwater adventures are within reach.

Why Visit Khao Lak?
Khao Lak is all about space and a slower pace.
Beaches here tend to feel quieter than those in Phuket, while the surrounding area offers waterfalls, rainforest, local markets and easy access to the Similan and Surin Islands.
It works particularly well for couples, families and travelers who want nature and beach time without needing nightlife every evening.
Best Time to Visit Khao Lak
The most popular time to visit is generally November to April, when conditions on the Andaman coast are typically drier and the sea is calmer.
The wetter months bring greener landscapes and fewer visitors, but boat trips and island excursions can be affected by sea conditions and seasonal national park closures.
If the
Similan Islands are high on your list, check the current national park opening dates before planning your trip.
Things to Do in Khao Lak
The beaches are only the beginning.
Spend a day exploring waterfalls and tropical landscapes, visit local markets or head offshore for snorkeling and diving around the Similan Islands.
Khao Lak is also well positioned for trips into
Khao Sok National Park, where limestone mountains, rainforest and the spectacular Cheow Lan Lake create a completely different side of southern Thailand.
Where to Stay in Khao Lak
Khao Lak isn’t one single beach. The resort area stretches along a long section of coastline, and where you stay can noticeably change the experience.
Nang Thong is convenient for first-time visitors, while
Bang Niang offers easy access to restaurants and the popular market. Travelers looking for a quieter resort escape can explore areas farther north such as
Khuk Khak,
Pak Weep
and
Bang Sak.
Explore the Similan Islands
For many travelers, the Similan Islands are one of the biggest reasons to visit Khao Lak.
The protected archipelago is known for clear water, granite rock formations, white beaches and excellent snorkeling and diving.
Access is seasonal, so always check current national park regulations and weather conditions before booking.

Visit Khao Sok National Park
Khao Lak can also be combined with one of southern Thailand’s most dramatic landscapes.
Khao Sok National Park is home to ancient rainforest, towering limestone formations and wildlife, while nearby Cheow Lan Lake is famous for its emerald water and floating accommodation.
Stay overnight if you have time rather than squeezing everything into a rushed day trip.
Getting to Khao Lak
Phuket International Airport is the most convenient major airport for most international visitors heading to Khao Lak.
The journey north by road generally takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on where you’re staying and traffic conditions.
Private transfers, taxis and shared transport are commonly used, and once you arrive, local transport or a rental vehicle can be useful for exploring beyond your resort.iland.
How Long Should You Stay?
Around three to five days gives you enough time to enjoy the beaches without rushing and still fit in an island or nature excursion.
Stay longer if you want to combine diving, Khao Sok and a few gloriously unproductive beach days into the same trip.
Khao Lak or Phuket?
Choose Khao Lak if you want quieter beaches, nature and a more relaxed resort atmosphere.
Choose Phuket if nightlife, shopping, restaurants and a much larger variety of activities are higher priorities.
And because they’re relatively close, you don’t necessarily have to choose one. Combining both can give you two very different versions of Thailand’s Andaman coast.
Explore Khao Lak
Quiet beaches are only part of the story. Explore islands, rainforest and some of southern Thailand’s most memorable landscapes from Khao Lak.
