Best Things to Do in Bangkok

Pawintra Chuychart • October 6, 2026

From golden temples and bustling markets to street food, river journeys and rooftop views, Bangkok is a city that rewards curiosity.

There’s far more to Thailand’s capital than ticking famous landmarks off a list. Explore the historic heart of the city, follow the Chao Phraya River, eat your way through Chinatown and leave enough time to discover Bangkok between the big attractions.

Visit the Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

The Grand Palace is one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks and home to Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Intricate architecture, golden details and centuries of Thai history make this an essential stop for first-time visitors.

Go earlier in the day when possible and remember to dress respectfully when visiting the temple complex.

See the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Just south of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho is best known for its enormous reclining Buddha and beautiful temple grounds.

It’s easy to combine both attractions in the same morning before continuing across the river to Wat Arun.

Cross the River to Wat Arun

Rising beside the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is one of Bangkok’s most recognizable sights. Take the short ferry across the river and explore the temple up close before enjoying the riverside views.

It’s particularly beautiful in the softer light of late afternoon.

Explore Bangkok’s Chinatown

Yaowarat Road comes alive in the evening with neon lights, busy sidewalks and seemingly endless places to eat.

Come hungry and explore rather than planning every meal in advance. Seafood, noodles, grilled snacks and desserts are all part of the experience.

Travel Along the Chao Phraya River

The river is more than a Bangkok attraction. It’s also one of the most interesting ways to move through the city.

Hop on a river boat to see temples, neighborhoods and Bangkok’s skyline from the water, or explore some of the quieter canals for a different perspective on the capital.

Discover Bangkok’s Markets

Bangkok’s markets range from local food markets to enormous weekend shopping destinations. Chatuchak Weekend Market is the famous one, with thousands of stalls selling everything from clothing and crafts to food and homeware.

If markets are high on your list, check the opening days before planning your itinerary.

Eat Your Way Through Bangkok

Some of the best Bangkok experiences happen around a table, or on a plastic stool beside the street.

Try classics such as pad kra pao, boat noodles, som tam and mango sticky rice, explore local markets or join a food tour if you want to discover dishes and neighborhoods you might otherwise miss.

See Bangkok From Above

After exploring at street level, finish the day with a completely different view.

Bangkok has rooftop bars and observation points across the city where you can watch the skyline change as the sun goes down and the lights come on.

Take a Day Trip to Ayutthaya

If you have an extra day, head north to Ayutthaya, Thailand’s former royal capital.

Ancient temple ruins and giant Buddha images make it an easy cultural escape from modern Bangkok, with trains and organized tours connecting the two cities.
