Best Things to Do in Khao Lak

Pawintra Chuychart • October 6, 2026

Tropical islands, quiet beaches, rainforest and waterfalls. Khao Lak is the perfect base for exploring some of the most beautiful landscapes along Thailand’s Andaman coast.

Khao Lak may be known for its relaxed beaches, but there’s plenty to do once you leave the sun lounger. From snorkeling around remote islands to exploring national parks and local markets, here are some of the best experiences to add to your trip.

Explore the Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are one of the biggest highlights of a trip to Khao Lak.

This protected archipelago is famous for clear turquoise water, white-sand beaches and impressive marine life, making it particularly popular for snorkeling and diving.

Trips operate seasonally, so check current national park opening dates and sea conditions before planning your visit.

Spend a Day on Khao Lak’s Beaches

You don’t need to travel far for beautiful scenery.

Khao Lak’s long coastline includes beaches such as Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak and Bang Sak, each offering a slightly different atmosphere.

Find a quiet stretch of sand, order something cold and allow the itinerary to temporarily stop existing. 🌴

Discover Khao Sok National Park

For a complete change of scenery, head inland toward Khao Sok National Park.

Dense rainforest, limestone mountains and wildlife make this one of southern Thailand’s most spectacular natural areas. Hiking, river activities and guided nature experiences are available throughout the region.

If you have enough time, consider staying overnight rather than treating Khao Sok as a quick photo stop.

Explore Cheow Lan Lake

Located within the wider Khao Sok area, Cheow Lan Lake is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and rainforest.

Boat trips cross the emerald reservoir, while floating accommodation makes it possible to wake up surrounded by water and mountains.

It’s worth dedicating more time to the area if your itinerary allows.

Go Snorkeling or Diving

The Andaman Sea around Khao Lak provides access to some of Thailand’s best-known dive sites.

The Similan Islands are the headline attraction, while longer diving trips may also explore areas around the Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock.

Conditions and access vary throughout the year, so plan diving around the season rather than assuming every site is always available.

Visit a Waterfall

Several waterfalls are hidden among the tropical landscapes surrounding Khao Lak.

Ton Chong Fa Waterfall is one of the best known and can be reached through a forest trail, making it an easy nature escape away from the coast.

Water levels can vary considerably depending on the season.

Explore Bang Niang Market

For a change from beaches and boat trips, spend an evening exploring Bang Niang Market.

The market brings together Thai food, snacks, clothing, souvenirs and local products, making it an easy place to wander around and try a few different dishes.

Visit the International Tsunami Museum

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami had a profound impact on Khao Lak and the surrounding communities.

The area includes memorial sites and exhibitions that document the disaster and its effects. Visiting offers important historical context to a destination that has since been extensively rebuilt.

Watch the Sunset

Sometimes the best activity requires absolutely no planning.

Khao Lak’s west-facing coastline makes it a beautiful place to watch the sun disappear over the Andaman Sea, particularly after a day spent exploring.
