Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai | Temples, Food & Nature

Pawintra Chuychart • October 6, 2026

Golden temples, misty mountains, night markets and unforgettable northern Thai food. Chiang Mai has plenty to explore beyond the walls of the Old City.

Chiang Mai is one of those places where you can spend the morning exploring centuries-old temples, escape into the mountains in the afternoon and finish the day wandering through a night market with a bowl of khao soi.

Here are some of the best experiences to add to your trip.

Explore Chiang Mai Old City

The historic Old City is the natural place to start. Surrounded by remnants of ancient walls and a moat, the area is filled with temples, cafés, markets and quiet streets that are easy to explore at your own pace.

Two of the most important temples here are Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang.

Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Sitting high above Chiang Mai on Doi Suthep mountain, this golden temple is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

Climb the naga-lined staircase to the temple complex and enjoy panoramic views across Chiang Mai from the mountain.

Discover Doi Inthanon National Park

Around two hours from central Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon National Park is home to Thailand’s highest mountain.

Waterfalls, forest trails, viewpoints and mountain scenery make it one of the best day trips from the city, particularly for travelers looking for a break from the urban heat.

Eat Khao Soi

You haven't really experienced Chiang Mai until a bowl of khao soi has appeared somewhere in the itinerary.

The northern Thai specialty combines noodles with a rich curry broth, crispy noodles and fresh accompaniments. You’ll find versions everywhere from simple local restaurants to more polished dining spots.

Wander Through the Night Markets

Chiang Mai becomes particularly lively after sunset.

Depending on the day, explore the Sunday Walking Street, Saturday Walking Street or Chiang Mai Night Bazaar for street food, handicrafts, clothing and local products.

Come hungry. That part is important.

See Chiang Mai From the Mountains

Doi Suthep isn't the only reason to leave the city behind.

The surrounding mountains offer viewpoints, waterfalls, hiking trails and small communities, making it easy to combine Chiang Mai's cultural attractions with a completely different side of northern Thailand.

Take a Thai Cooking Class

Instead of simply eating your way through northern Thailand, learn how some of its dishes are made.

Many cooking experiences begin with a market visit before preparing several Thai dishes, making this an easy half-day activity and a rather useful souvenir to bring home.

Experience an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Chiang Mai is famous for elephant tourism, but experiences vary significantly.

Look for responsible sanctuaries that prioritize animal welfare and allow elephants to behave naturally.
Avoid attractions offering Elephantriding, performances or forced interactions purely for photographs.

Visit a Waterfall

Several waterfalls can be reached from Chiang Mai, including the unusual Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls, where mineral deposits create a textured surface that visitors can climb.

They're an easy way to add a little nature to a trip dominated by temples and markets.

Slow Down and Explore the Cafés

Not every Chiang Mai day needs an itinerary.

The city has a thriving café scene, particularly around Nimman, where modern coffee shops, restaurants and small boutiques provide a completely different atmosphere from the Old City.
