Thailand's history stretches far beyond modern Bangkok.

One of the best places to experience it is Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore ancient temple ruins, enormous Buddha statues and historic structures scattered throughout the city.

Further north, Sukhothai offers another extraordinary glimpse into Thailand's past, with centuries-old temples surrounded by lakes, trees and peaceful countryside.

2. Head North Into the Mountains

7. Experience Thai Festivals and Traditions

Timing your visit around a Thai festival can completely change the experience.

Songkran, the Thai New Year in April, is famous internationally for enormous water celebrations, but the festival also has important cultural traditions involving family, temples and respect for elders.

Loy Krathong transforms waterways in many parts of Thailand with small decorated floating offerings.

Throughout the year, individual provinces and communities celebrate their own religious, cultural and food festivals.

These experiences reveal a side of Thailand that can't be found by simply checking attractions off a list.

8. Slow Down in Rural Thailand

Not every memorable destination has to be famous.

Travel beyond Thailand's major tourism centers and you'll find another version of the country:

Rice fields.

Small towns.

Local markets.

Roadside restaurants.

Farming communities.

Mountain villages.

Temples without tour buses parked outside.

This kind of travel isn't about racing between attractions.
