How to Get to Koh Samui: Plane, Ferry, or Bus Which Is the Most Convenient?

Pawintra Chuychart • March 13, 2026

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most popular island destinations, and getting there is easier than many travelers expect. Whether you prefer speed, affordability, or a scenic journey, there are several ways to reach the island. This guide explains how to get to Koh Samui by plane, ferry, or land transport so you can choose the most convenient option for your trip.

1. Fly Directly to Koh Samui

The fastest and most convenient way to reach the island is by flying directly to Samui International Airport. Daily flights operate from Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand. The flight from Bangkok takes about 1 hour, making it the quickest option for travelers with limited time. Although flights can be more expensive than other transport methods, they offer comfort and convenience.

2. Travel by Ferry

Another popular option is traveling by ferry to Koh Samui. Many travelers first reach Surat Thani or Chumphon on the mainland, then take a ferry to the island. Ferries depart regularly and take about 1.5–2 hours depending on the route. This option is more affordable and gives you beautiful views of the Gulf of Thailand along the way.

3. Bus or Train + Ferry

For budget travelers, taking a bus or train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, followed by a ferry to Koh Samui, is a common choice. While the journey takes longer (around 10–12 hours), it is significantly cheaper and allows you to experience more of Thailand’s landscapes during the trip.

Which Option Is Best?

If you want the fastest and easiest way to get to Koh Samui, flying is the best choice. However, if you are traveling on a budget or enjoy scenic routes, the ferry or bus-and-ferry combination is a great alternative.

No matter which route you choose, visiting Koh Samui is always worth the journey thanks to its beautiful beaches, tropical scenery, and vibrant island atmosphere.
