Things That Are Completely Normal in Thailand But Weird to Foreigners Part2

Pawintra Chuychart • May 22, 2026

Thailand is one of the world's most popular travel destinations, welcoming millions of visitors every year. While many travelers fall in love with the country's food, beaches, and friendly people, they are often surprised by some everyday things that locals barely notice.

What seems unusual to a visitor is often completely normal to Thai people. Here are some of the most common things foreigners find strange when visiting Thailand for the first time.

1.Street Food Is Everywhere

In many countries, buying dinner from a street vendor is uncommon.

In Thailand, it's completely normal.

From grilled meat skewers and noodle soups to fresh fruit and desserts, street food is an essential part of daily life. Many locals buy meals from vendors every day rather than cooking at home.

Some of the country's best food is found on sidewalks and local markets.

2.Motorbikes Carry Almost Anything

Foreigners are often amazed by what can be transported on a motorbike.

You may see families, furniture, ladders, boxes, plants, appliances, and even entire food stalls being moved on two wheels.

While it may look impossible, locals have mastered the art of motorbike transportation.

3.Public Displays of Anger Are Rare

In Thai culture, remaining calm is highly valued.

Raising your voice, arguing aggressively, or losing your temper in public is generally viewed negatively. Many Thais prefer to handle disagreements quietly and politely whenever possible.

Visitors from more direct cultures sometimes find this approach unusual.

4.Food Is a Constant Topic of Conversation

One of the most common questions in Thailand is:

"Have you eaten yet?"

It's often used as a friendly greeting rather than a literal question.

Food plays a huge role in Thai culture, and conversations frequently revolve around meals, restaurants, snacks, and where to eat next.

5. People Often Use Nicknames

Most Thais have short nicknames that friends, family, and colleagues use every day.

These nicknames can be based on animals, colors, foods, personality traits, or completely random words.

As a result, you may meet people named Ice, Beer, Apple, Boss, Bird, Pancake, Bank, or Golf.

6.Nobody Is In a Hurry to Tan

While many Western tourists try to get darker skin during vacation, lighter skin has traditionally been associated with beauty in many parts of Asia.

You'll often see umbrellas used for shade, long sleeves on sunny days, and skincare products marketed with whitening properties.

This cultural difference surprises many visitors.

Thailand's unique customs are part of what makes the country so fascinating to explore. While some habits may seem unusual at first, understanding local culture helps visitors appreciate everyday life beyond the beaches and tourist attractions.

The more time you spend in Thailand, the more these "strange" things start to feel completely normal too.
