Basic Thai Conversation for Travelers

Cute & Easy Thai Phrases You Can Actually Use

Learning a few Thai words can instantly make locals smile. Thai people truly appreciate it when visitors try to speak the language even just a little. Here are some simple and useful Thai phrases you can practice before your trip.

1. The Magic Words (Very Important!)

These are the most important words you should remember.

Hello

  • Sawasdee (สวัสดี)

You can add:

  • “krap” (ครับ) – if you are male
  • “ka” (ค่ะ) – if you are female

Example:

  • Sawasdee krap
  • Sawasdee ka

Adding “krap” or “ka” makes you sound polite and adorable

Thank You

  • Khob khun krap / ka (ขอบคุณครับ / ค่ะ)

Thai people say thank you often. Use it frequently!

Sorry / Excuse me

  • Khor thot krap / ka (ขอโทษครับ / ค่ะ)

Useful when you bump into someone or want to get attention politely.

2. Simple Everyday Conversations

#At a Market

How much is this? : Tao rai? (เท่าไหร่)

Example: An-nee tao rai krap/ka?
(How much is this?)

Can you discount? (polite & cute way)

: Lot noi dai mai? (ลดหน่อยได้ไหม)

Say it with a smile — it works better!

#At a Restaurant

Delicious! : Aroi mak! (อร่อยมาก)

Locals LOVE hearing this.

Not spicy : Mai phet (ไม่เผ็ด)

Very important in Thailand

A little spicy : Phet nit noi (เผ็ดนิดหน่อย)

#Transportation

Where is…? : Yoo tee nai? (อยู่ที่ไหน)

Go to… : Pai… (ไป…)

Example: Pai hotel krap/ka.  ( Going to Hotel )

3. Cute Words That Sound Friendly

Thai language is soft and friendly. These words help you sound warmer:

  • Sabai sabai (สบายๆ) – relaxed / chill
  • Sanuk (สนุก) – fun
  • Suay (สวย) – beautiful (for things or women)
  • Lor (หล่อ) – handsome (for men)

Complimenting food, places, or people politely is always welcome.

4. Words You Should Be Careful With

Thai is a tonal language. Some words can sound completely different if pronounced incorrectly.

⚠️ Be careful with:

  • “Mai” (ใหม่ / ไม่ / ไหม)
It can mean new, not, or turn a sentence into a question — depending on tone.
  • Avoid using slang you hear online unless you fully understand it.
  • Never joke about the Thai Royal Family — it is very serious in Thailand.

When unsure, keep it simple and polite.

5. The Golden Rule: Smile

Even if your pronunciation is not perfect, Thai people appreciate effort.

Say:

  • Sawasdee
  • Khob khun
  • Add krap or ka
  • Smile 😊

That’s already enough to create a good connection.
